Port Harcourt, Rivers – The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) has announced the resumption of train services on the Port Harcourt–Aba corridor, effective Monday, September 8, 2025, following successful testing of Locomotive 2223.
The locomotive has been certified fit for operation, paving the way for the restoration of normal train schedules along this vital route connecting Rivers and Abia States.
In a statement issued by Dr. Onyedikachi S. Onovo, District Public Relations Officer for the NRC’s Eastern District, the corporation expressed regret for the earlier disruption that affected passengers.
As a gesture of goodwill, the NRC has introduced special fare concessions. Passengers who held tickets for the disrupted service will travel free of charge, while new passengers will benefit from a 50% discount on standard fares.
This move aligns with the directive of the NRC’s Managing Director to prioritize customer satisfaction and restore confidence in the rail service.
The resumption of the Port Harcourt–Aba train service is expected to ease transportation challenges for commuters and businesses in the region, fostering economic connectivity between the two cities.
The NRC reiterated its commitment to delivering safe, reliable, and customer-friendly rail services across Nigeria, assuring the public of ongoing efforts to maintain operational excellence.
The announcement has been welcomed by commuters and stakeholders, who view the restored service and fare incentives as a positive step toward improving rail transport accessibility in the South-South and South-East regions.
