Obaseki's Romance With The Rule of Law

I was just going through Mr Asue Akintunde Ighodalo's ranting, when I stumbled on a video of outgoing governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, appealing to Edo residents to remain calm over the outcome of Saturday’s governorship election where the last vestiges of his political relevance PDP was laid to rest by the victory of the APC Governorship candidate Senator Monday Okpebholo.

I saw in the video, the outgoing PDP Governor trying to fight back tears when he made the hush hush broadcast on Monday about the defeat of his godson, Mr Asue Akintunde Ighodalo, with his honorary doctorate degree!. It was written all over him and I was sorry for the man who saw himself as a small deity. And I recalled, "No man is god".

He spoke about the "disregard to processes and rule of law". Imagine! A Governor Godwin Obaseki talking about rule of law. When he demolished Tony Adun's hotel, there was no rule of law? In the broadcast he said, “The attractive thing about democracy is the power it bestows on the people to choose who governs them".

See who is talking about democracy. It reminds me of the tale, "when a mule comes to its senses", which is a situation where the animal finally realizes the truth or comes to an awakening after a period of stubbornness or ignorance. For the mule, this is usually after a very long period. Like eight years in our unfortunate case.

I wonder why he came to such a good conclusion because these words were alien to the Edo State government dictionary when it conducted the last Local government council elections. What transpired then was the drafting of a retired judge into the EDSIEC office to write results that listed the PDP as winners of all 18 LG council chairmanship and councillorship seats from the 192 wards of the State.

The very funny Governor said of the fraudulent elections as, "A reflection of the wish of the majority of Edo people". Yet nobody voted in that charade. Reason being that even to the least discerning, huge amount of impunity and reckless disregard for processes and rule of law was displayed under the governor's Command.

The governor was so elated over the outcome of that local government election, that he said 'Edo people are democratically mature'. He went on, " It was a free and fair election. The mass participation and dominance of PDP as a party in the State was clearly exhibited in this election.”

Turn the page to today after Edo people have chosen their governor and his deputy in Senator Monday Okpebholo and Rt Hon Dennis Idahosa. It is the end of the junta in Edo...the end of Repression and the violent measures of the PDP. It is the end of a paranoid regime... the end of Edo State's Economic Decline with the orgy of multiple MoUs and taxes.

The only sad and aggrieved who feel vexed and violated at this time in Edo state right now, are the remnants of the Obaseki PDP. The rest of us are celebrating the end of his dictatorship. It is jubilation over the end of a Sole Administrator who is all knowing, all wise and all powerful.

This is he who said Nigeria will burn and that the election is a do or die against his oath of office. Why will he suddenly become a peacemaker chanting the rule of law? How the mighty have collapsed!
